Plans to move a primary school in the Borders into the grounds of the towns high school have been abandoned after significant opposition from parents and local residents. A public protest was organised in Eyemouth to voice concerns about the proposal, highlighting widespread community unease.
Scottish Borders Council reported receiving hundreds of objections since the plans were first announced over the summer. Consequently, a report has been presented recommending that the relocation be cancelled, with the council stating it will "take time to reconsider its approach and intentions."
Discussions about replacing Eyemouths primary school have been ongoing for several years due to the deteriorating condition of the current building. The latest proposal involved a 15 million project to relocate the school, which would have required reconfiguring and expanding the high school to accommodate the new facility. The existing primary school would have been demolished, and a new early learning centre constructed on the same site.
During consultation, the council received hundreds of responses, with the overwhelming majority opposing the plan. Key concerns included whether the area could manage increased numbers of students and staff, and safety issues related to housing a wide age range within a single campus.
Sarah Duncan, representing the parents protest group, expressed cautious optimism about the decision. She said: "We are glad the council is finally listening to the people of Eyemouth, but we will not celebrate until the agreement is confirmed at the council meeting. We also want assurances that the 15 million remains allocated for Eyemouth and that efforts continue to provide a new school within the current area."
Julie Pirone, executive member for education, confirmed that the council had taken community feedback seriously. "We have reflected on the responses received and recognise that the vast majority are not supportive of the proposals. Therefore, the statutory consultation on the relocation should end. Local members share this view," she said.
Pirone added that Scottish Borders Council maintains a strong record of prioritising investment in its school infrastructure and remains committed to delivering the "best possible facility" for children in Eyemouth.
Analysis: Eyemouth Primary School Relocation Plan Abandoned After Community Backlash
The decision to abandon the proposal of relocating Eyemouth's primary school to the grounds of the town's high school highlights the power of community engagement in shaping local decisions. The Scottish Borders Council's plan to move forward with a £15 million project faced overwhelming opposition from parents, residents, and the broader community, leading to the reconsideration of the project.
The consultation period saw an influx of concerns regarding the feasibility of accommodating a larger student body and the safety of housing both primary and secondary school-aged children on the same campus. Local residents voiced strong objections, emphasizing the risk of overcrowding and potential disruptions to the educational environment. The local council, acknowledging the widespread disapproval, decided to halt the proposal and reevaluate its approach.
Importantly, while the council has decided to abandon the relocation plans, the future of the Eyemouth Primary School remains uncertain. Parents, represented by Sarah Duncan, have cautiously welcomed the move but are clear in their demand for assurances regarding the continued allocation of £15 million for a new school facility in the area. This proposal was designed to address the aging infrastructure of the existing primary school, which had been a source of concern for years.
As the council shifts its focus to alternative solutions, it must balance the need for modernization with the desires and concerns of the community. The outcome of this decision will shape the future of Eyemouth's education system and serve as a reminder of the importance of community consultation in local governance.
