This week, King Charles III formally revoked the remaining royal titles of his brother, formerly known as Prince Andrew, including his memberships in the Order of the Garter and as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order. British royal expert Hilary Fordwich described the move as "better late than never," emphasizing that decisive early action is always preferable and noting that this demonstrates Prince Williams influence within the monarchy.
The changes were officially published in the Gazette, the UKs public record. The first announcement declared: "THE KING has directed that the appointment of Andrew Albert Christian Edward MOUNTBATTEN-WINDSOR to be a Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, dated 23 April 2006, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order." This refers to Andrews elevation to the Order of the Garter in 2006.
He was also stripped of his 2011 honor as a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order. The official notice read: "THE KING has directed that the appointment of Andrew Albert Christian Edward MOUNTBATTEN-WINDSOR to be a Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order, dated 19 February 2011, shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order."
Earlier, in late October, the palace revealed that Andrew would lose the "Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew" due to allegations connected to Jeffrey Epstein. He is now referred to simply as Andrew Mountbatten Windsor, with no princely title.
The October 30, 2025, statement also addressed his residence at Royal Lodge: "His lease on Royal Lodge has, to date, provided him with legal protection to continue in residence. Formal notice has now been served to surrender the lease, and he will move to alternative private accommodation."
The palace emphasized that these actions were necessary despite Andrews continued denial of the allegations: "Their Majesties wish to make clear that their thoughts and utmost sympathies have been, and will remain with, the victims and survivors of any and all forms of abuse."
Royal commentator Ian Pelham Turner said there is "not much sympathy" for Andrew within the royal family. He noted that King Charles maintained Andrews position for years partly out of family loyalty and partly to prevent new publications by Andrew. Sarah Ferguson, Andrews ex-wife, also lost her royal titles, although their daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, retained theirs.
Meredith Constant, another royal analyst, stated that the timing of the announcement was strategic, coinciding with ongoing royal news and the logistics of Andrew vacating Royal Lodge. The move was seen as providing a measure of accountability and strengthening King Charless public image.
Andrew had faced legal action from Epstein victim Virginia Roberts Giuffre, who alleged she was forced into sexual encounters with him as a minor. Giuffre passed away earlier this year.
