Bolsonaro's oldest son announces intention to run for Brazil presidency in 2026

SAO PAULO Flvio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and current senator, declared on Friday that he will run for the presidency in 2026, following his fathers guidance. The former president, who is serving a 27-year prison sentence for involvement in an attempted coup, has designated his son to carry forward their political movement.

I accept with profound responsibility the mission given to me by Brazils prominent political and moral leader, Jair Messias Bolsonaro, to continue our national project, Flvio Bolsonaro stated on social media platform X.

The senators office confirmed that he intends to challenge incumbent President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva, who is seeking a fourth nonconsecutive term, as the candidate of the Liberal Party. Flvio Bolsonaro recently visited his father in prison as part of his preparation for the campaign.

Elected as a senator in 2018 for an eight-year term, Flvio Bolsonaro previously served as a state legislator in Rio de Janeiro. He has faced accusations of embezzlement related to family-run political offices, but the courts dismissed the case. He maintains his innocence.

Although many expected So Paulo Governor Tarcsio de Freitas, a former member of Jair Bolsonaros cabinet, to emerge as the leading candidate, Bolsonaros inner circle supported Flvio as the presidential contender. Polls indicate that Jair Bolsonaro, even while incarcerated, remains a pivotal figure in Brazils polarized political environment, and his endorsement is seen as essential for any opposition candidate aiming to compete against Lula in 2026.
