Trump warns Honduras of repercussions if election results are tampered with, calls on officials to finish tallying votes.

President Donald Trump intervened in the tightly contested Honduran presidential election on Monday, warning that severe consequences would follow if officials attempted to alter the vote results. Posting on Truth Social, Trump accused Honduras of "trying to change the results" without providing evidence.

"If they do, there will be hell to pay! The people of Honduras voted in overwhelming numbers on November 30th," he stated.

The remarks came shortly after Ana Paola Hall, head of the National Electoral Council, shared on X that the preliminary reporting system, which began releasing results on Sunday evening, had tallied 57% of votes.

The early counts indicated a close race between conservative candidates Nasry Asfura from the National Party and Salvador Nasralla of the Liberal Party, with Asfura holding only a slim lead. Democratic socialist candidate Rixi Moncada of the LIBRE Party trailed by about 20 percentage points.

"It is imperative that the Commission finish counting the Votes," Trump wrote. "Hundreds of thousands of Hondurans must have their Votes counted. Democracy must prevail!"

Election officials have confirmed that counting will continue but have not given a timeline for updated results. Some parts of the councils online system appeared temporarily offline.

Just prior to the system freeze, Trump endorsed Asfura as the sole candidate his administration would collaborate with, pledging to oppose "narco-communists" alongside the U.S.

Both Asfura and Nasralla cited the close tally as evidence of their leads but have not formally declared victory.

Trump also announced plans to pardon former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernndez, currently serving a 45-year U.S. sentence, further highlighting U.S. influence in Honduras political landscape.

Trumps comments added fresh pressure to the already tense post-election environment. The final results will shape whether the country moves away from the ruling LIBRE Party and could significantly affect its future relationship with Washington.
