Deadly fire sparked by smoking in bed

An inquiry has determined that a fire resulting in the death of a 77-year-old man originated from a cigarette flame. Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service reported that emergency crews were dispatched to a bungalow on Redland Road in Mansfield at 23:19 BST on 18 August after receiving reports of smoke.

The victim, James Stokes, commonly known as Jim, was discovered by firefighters and declared dead at the scene. A subsequent inquest confirmed that Mr. Stokes died due to the effects of the house fire.

The investigation revealed that Mr. Stokes was a habitual smoker who often smoked while in bed. Officials concluded that the blaze began when a cigarette flame accidentally ignited his clothing or bedding.

Richard Leighton, fire investigator and group manager, stated: "On behalf of Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service, I extend our heartfelt condolences to everyone who knew Jim. Despite repeated advice from family and fire service personnel, he continued to smoke in bed, unaware of the serious risks."

He added, "This heartbreaking event serves as an important reminder to the public. If you smoke, never do so in bed or when feeling drowsy. Always use a stable ashtray, ensure cigarettes are completely extinguished, and keep lighters and matches away from children. Following these precautions can prevent tragic accidents."
