First joint appearance of North American leaders

The Kennedy Center in Washington DC witnessed a historic moment as the heads of the United States, Mexico, and Canada appeared together for the 2026 World Cup draw. Despite ongoing trade disagreements, the leaders greeted each other with smiles and cordiality.

For Donald Trump, this event marked his first encounter with Mexico's Claudia Sheinbaum, leader of the US's largest trading partner. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who has met Trump multiple times before, attended amidst stalled trade negotiations. Earlier this week, Trump expressed a willingness to maintain the longstanding US-Mexico-Canada trade pact, known as the USMCA, which is scheduled for review next year. Carney emphasized that the agreement has helped shield Canadian businesses from most US tariffs.

On stage, the leaders appeared relaxed as they drew balls representing their countries to begin forming the groups for the tournament. Their interactions were friendly, culminating in a group selfie with FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Later, Trump and Sheinbaum were seen talking privately about trade matters, including tariffs on steel, aluminum, and automobiles. Carney also joined them, reflecting the shared interest in preserving the USMCA, which has existed in some form since 1994. Its future remains uncertain until the mandatory review expected in mid-2026.

Earlier statements from Trump suggested that the US could let the trade agreement lapse or renegotiate it with Mexico and Canada. He has indicated that he believes both countries have benefited disproportionately from the deal. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer noted that splitting the agreement could make economic sense, given the distinct relationships with Canada and Mexico.

Originally signed during Trump's first term, the USMCA was hailed by him as "the best agreement" made by the US. American businesses have shown support for maintaining it.

During the World Cup draw, Trump was awarded the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize, which Infantino described as recognition of his efforts to promote global peace and unity. In brief remarks, Trump called the award "one of the honors" of his life.
