German president: Berlin and London strengthening their relationship after Brexit

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier has expressed confidence that relations between Berlin and London are steadily improving following the challenges of the post-Brexit period.

Speaking to reporters before departing for an official visit to the United Kingdom early Wednesday, Steinmeier noted that the initial years after Britains exit from the European Union were complicated. However, both countries have learned how to adapt and are now actively working toward strengthening their cooperation.

The president underlined the importance of King Charles III choosing Germany as the destination for his first state visit before his coronation in March 2023. According to Steinmeier, this gesture reflected the deep significance that both nations place on their long-standing relationship and mutual friendship.

The current visit marks the first state trip by a German head of state to the United Kingdom in 27 years. Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Bdenbender, are scheduled to arrive at Windsor Castle later on Wednesday, where they will be formally greeted with a ceremonial carriage procession and military honors.

In London, Steinmeier is expected to meet Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street. Their discussions will focus on political and economic cooperation, cultural ties, and initiatives aimed at making contact between the citizens of both countries easier and more effective.

Beyond diplomacy, the trip carries symbolic meaning as well. On the final day of his visit, Steinmeier plans to lay a wreath at the remains of Coventry Cathedral a powerful reminder of the citys destruction during German air raids in World War II and a tribute to reconciliation and remembrance.
