Germany detains two suspected Islamic State members

German authorities announced on Wednesday the arrest of two men suspected of affiliation with the Islamic State terrorist group in the western part of the country. The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office reported that the Iraqi nationals were taken into custody on Tuesday in the cities of Trier and Delbrck.

Investigators stated that the men were allegedly active members of the Islamic State in Iraq during 2016 and 2017. One of the suspects reportedly engaged in combat, while the other was involved with a Sharia administrative body. Both face charges of being members of a foreign terrorist organization.

Authorities conducted searches on Tuesday at the homes of the two suspects and three additional individuals in Trier, Delbrck, Cologne, Chemnitz, and Wittmund. Following their arrest, the two men were presented to the investigating judge at the Federal Court of Justice in Karlsruhe and have been placed in custody pending further proceedings.
