IDF Chief Zamir appoints new head to investigate intelligence failures in 'Walls of Jericho' Hamas plot

Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir, Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces, announced on Thursday that Major General (res.) Roni Numa will head a new team tasked with investigating Israeli intelligence shortcomings connected to Hamas's "Walls of Jericho" attack plan.

"We are entering the next stage following the inquiries of October 7, which involves embedding the lessons learned into the IDFs operational framework and executing them," Zamir stated.

Reports from N12 News on Sunday indicated that the IDF plans to launch an investigation into the intelligence failures surrounding Hamas's 2022 offensive strategy, an initiative that came unexpectedly given Zamir's previous role as head of the Southern Command at that time.

The Turgeman Commission, which was responsible for examining the IDF's performance on October 7, faced criticism from both military and political sectors for neglecting to review prior plans, including the 2022 "Walls of Jericho" operation and a 2018 raid.

Zamir emphasized, "It is our responsibility to confront failure directly, extract every possible lesson, and ensure such lapses are not repeated. This process is essential to strengthen the IDF's capabilities and will provide guidance for years ahead. We must guarantee these lessons are fully integrated across all levels of the organization."

Lieutenant General Zamir was photographed during a situation assessment in Rafah, Gaza Strip, on November 16, 2025, highlighting his hands-on approach to operational oversight.

This story is ongoing.
