Investigation into Quran desecration at hospital's faith center

Authorities are probing an incident at St James's Hospital in Leeds where a Quran was reportedly damaged in what is being treated as a religion-related act of criminal damage. According to an internal email from Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust CEO Brendan Brown, both the Muslim holy book and a framed section of its text were harmed at the Faith Centre in the Bexley Wing.

Mr Brown described the alleged act as "alarming and entirely unacceptable," highlighting the seriousness of the situation.

West Yorkshire Police confirmed the event occurred on Saturday, stating: "We recognize the effect such offenses can have on our communities and are collaborating with Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust to investigate every available lead."

In his message to staff, Mr Brown emphasized the deep spiritual importance of the Quran to Muslims worldwide, calling the incident Islamophobic. He reinforced that any hate crime targeting religion or belief is intolerable, and no onewhether staff, patient, or community membershould endure or witness such acts.

He further affirmed the trust's dedication to maintaining a safe and supportive environment for everyone, regardless of faith, background, or identity.

The trust is cooperating with police inquiries and has announced measures to strengthen security at the Faith Centre. West Yorkshire Police have asked anyone with relevant information to come forward.
