US President Trump awarded first FIFA Peace Prize at World Cup draw

President Donald Trump of the United States has been named the first recipient of FIFA's newly established Peace Prize. The award was presented during the 2026 World Cup draw held in Washington, where the tournament will be co-hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

FIFA described the prize as an annual recognition for "individuals who have made exceptional contributions to global peace." During the ceremony, FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented Trump with a medal and a golden trophy in acknowledgment of his efforts to reduce international conflicts.

"This is truly one of the highest honors I have ever received," Trump commented. "The world is safer today. Just a year ago, the United States faced many challenges, and now we are at the forefront globally."

Some critics argue that the award appears to have been created specifically for Trump, noting his close relationship with Infantino, who previously suggested him for the Nobel Peace Prize and commended his involvement in conflicts such as those in Gaza and Ukraine. Observers highlighted a lack of transparency in the selection process, with no public nominees, jury, or evident participation from the FIFA Council in the decision.

A coalition of human rights organizations, cited by the Press Association, issued a statement warning: Presenting this prize amid rising human rights violations and restrictions on civil libertiesincluding the treatment of immigrants, suppression of free speech, and increased militarization in US citiesraises concerns about the potential politicization of the 2026 World Cup.

Prior to the draw, Trump retracted previous threats to remove US cities as World Cup hosts if his security demands were not met, though he hinted at alternative measures should he perceive any threats. "No, I dont want to do that," he said. "We can address these issues effectively. I have demonstrated that in Washington and other locations."
