Nearly 24,000 households across Kent and East Sussex are experiencing ongoing water issues for a fifth consecutive day. South East Water (SEW) has been unable to fully restore supplies to areas including Tunbridge Wells, Pembury, Frant, and Eridge since Saturday, following a problem at a treatment facility.
On Wednesday, SEW issued a 10-day boil water notice for residents in the affected zones. The company is advising people to boil water before drinking, cooking, or brushing teeth. The same guidance applies to water for pets, but it should be cooled first. Boiling for one minute is sufficient, according to SEW.
Why Boil Water?
Monitoring has indicated that the water quality does not meet SEWs usual standards. Boiling is being recommended as a precautionary measure. The disruption originated after a chemical issue affected Pembury Water Treatment Works.
Health Risks
Dr. Neil Hudson, SEW's head of water quality, stated that the likelihood of any health issues for healthy individuals is very low. He noted that the waters disinfection may not have been as effective as normal, which is why the precaution is necessary. Residents feeling unwell are advised to seek medical attention.
Daily Use Guidance
Tap water is safe for washing and bathing. For dishwashing, boiled water is recommended, while dishwashers can be used if set to 65C or higher. Domestic water filters are not effective for removing potential contamination and should not replace boiling.
Cost and Compensation
Boiling water is inexpensive, costing approximately 6 pence to boil 2 litres using an electric kettle. SEW also confirmed that customers affected by interruptions are eligible for financial compensation: 30 for the initial period without mains water, and 30 for each additional 12-hour period.
Schools
Some local schools have closed due to the water disruption. Pupils and staff should follow the same precautions as households. Parents are advised to check with their individual school for details.
Duration
The boil water notice will remain in effect for 10 days starting Wednesday. SEW is working continuously to restore normal water supply and will update residents once water meets standard quality levels.
