During the beginning of the German state visit to the U.K., Kate Middleton, the Princess of Wales, executed a polished double curtsy for King Charles and Queen Camilla. The 43-year-old royal displayed this gesture of respect while welcoming German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and First Lady Elke Bdenbender on December 3, 2025.
Footage captured by Sky News shows Princess Kate stepping back with her left leg and curtsying as she made eye contact with King Charles. Moments later, she mirrored the action when Queen Camilla turned toward her. In response, the Queen sent a playful air kiss, which Kate returned with a cheerful greeting.
In royal protocol, curtsies signify respect and are performed separately for the King and Queen, which also suggested this was the Princesss first interaction with them that day. All senior members of the British royal family, including those with HRH titles like Princess Kate, are expected to bow or curtsy when meeting the monarchs. Prince William also follows this tradition, often bowing to his father and stepmother.
The etiquette extends beyond royals to the public as well. Men typically perform a slight neck bow, while women may offer a small curtsy, although handshakes are also considered acceptable.
Earlier that day, Prince William and Princess Kate were the first to welcome President Steinmeier and his wife at Heathrow Airport, representing King Charles in the ceremonial duties that have become a routine for them since 2022.
