Kate Middleton's Outfit for the Start of German State Visit Is Filled with Symbolism

At the beginning of Germany's state visit, Kate Middleton made a deliberate fashion choice filled with meaning. The Princess of Wales highlighted British designers while incorporating pieces with historical and personal significance.

On December 3, Princess Kate and Prince William welcomed German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Bdenbender, at Heathrow Airport, representing King Charles as the state visit commenced.

The 43-year-old royal wore a blue coat by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen, a designer known for her wedding gown, pairing it with a matching hat previously worn at Christmas 2023. Underneath, she layered a black Burberry dress and heeled boots, completing the ensemble with jewelry carrying deep sentimental value.

Among the jewelry were sapphire and diamond earrings once owned by Princess Diana and the all-diamond Prince of Wales Feathers Brooch, worn without its emerald drop. These choices not only honored her late mother-in-law but also subtly referenced her own title as Princess of Wales.

Kate Middleton has increasingly focused on promoting British fashion, and her outfit highlighted this commitment during the diplomatic event. Her use of heritage pieces reinforced both her personal and royal connections while supporting national designers.

The Prince of Wales Feathers Brooch, originally a wedding gift for Princess Alexandra of Denmark in 1863, draws from the Prince of Wales' historic emblem of three feathers emerging from a crown, a symbol tied to the title since the 14th century. Kate previously wore this brooch when welcoming South African President Cyril Ramaphosa in November 2022.

Queen Camilla joined Princess Kate in a coordinated display of blue. The Queen chose a cashmere coat with top-stitching by Anna Valentine, layered over a silk dress, and accessorized with a feathered hat by Philip Treacy and a sapphire-and-diamond brooch formerly owned by Queen Victoria. Their matching hues created a unified and elegant look for the official proceedings.
