A Nottinghamshire NHS trust has implemented new face mask guidelines due to a recent rise in respiratory infections, including influenza. Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Trust announced on Friday that individuals displaying flu or Covid-like symptoms should avoid visiting its facilities.
The updated mask requirements affect those attending the emergency department, children's admissions unit, radiology department, surgical admissions unit, and transitional care hub at King's Mill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield. The rule also applies to the Urgent Treatment Centre in Newark.
This move follows a recent appeal from hospital management urging the public to only use emergency services when absolutely necessary, in order to reduce overcrowding.
The trust emphasized that infection levels are continuously monitored and research supports mask-wearing as an effective measure to limit the spread of illnesses within hospitals. They stressed the importance of proactive steps to safeguard vulnerable patients, visitors, and staff, ensuring that essential services remain available in the coming weeks.
