New Zealand man allegedly consumed Faberge pendant resembling one from Bond movie while police gather evidence

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) Authorities in New Zealand are taking a cautious approach after a man reportedly attempted to smuggle a $19,000 New Zealand dollar pendant by swallowing it.

The 32-year-old suspect, whose identity has not been released, is alleged to have consumed an elaborate Faberg octopus pendant at Partridge Jewelers in Auckland on November 28. Police confirmed on Wednesday that no physical evidence of the pendant has been recovered so far.

Following his arrest, the man underwent a medical evaluation, and an officer has been assigned to monitor him continuously, Inspector Grae Anderson stated. At this moment, the pendant remains missing.

The suspect was apprehended inside the jewelry store minutes after the alleged incident. He appeared before Auckland District Court on November 29 and did not enter a plea on the theft charge.

The piece in question is a limited-edition Faberg egg pendant, inspired by the 1983 James Bond movie Octopussy, which features a plot involving jewel smuggling and a counterfeit Faberg egg. According to the jeweler, only 50 of these pendants were made. The item is crafted from gold, coated in green enamel, and set with 183 diamonds and two sapphires. It stands 8.4 centimeters (3.3 inches) tall and is displayed on a stand.

The egg opens to reveal an 18-carat yellow gold octopus inside, decorated with white diamond suckers and black diamond eyes. This design pays tribute to the antagonist of the Octopussy film, who is central to the story.

Inspector Anderson added, Since the suspect remains in police custody, we are obligated to continue monitoring him due to the unusual circumstances of this case.

The accused is scheduled to appear in court again on December 8.
