Researchers from the University of Illinois are striving to make a difference in the fight against cancer.

CHAMPAIGN-URBANA, Ill. Cancer diagnoses affect millions globally each year, a reality nobody wants to face. Researchers at the University of Illinois are working to change that. Stephen Boppart, a professor of engineering at the university, spoke with Amanda Brennan from WCIA 3 about an innovative device designed to reduce the need for repeat surgeries.

Boppart explained that the technology functions like a high-powered microscope for surgeons. Using the probe, surgeons can scan tissue during operations to detect any remaining cancer cells.

Last year, the research team had gathered all the necessary components. This year, they have successfully integrated them into a functioning system in the laboratory. Their next goal is to mount this system on a mobile cart suitable for use in operating rooms during clinical trials.

The cart allows surgeons to maneuver a handheld probe over large tumor cavities after removal. Additionally, a robotic arm now provides high-resolution imaging, enabling detailed inspection inside the patient to ensure no cancerous tissue remains.

Boppart noted that this technology has been under development for 15 to 20 years. Recently, the project received significant funding from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), giving a major boost to the teams efforts to finalize the system.
