The question of where the former Duke of York will live next continues to create quiet strain within the royal household. Although King Charles has reportedly pushed for change, a source says Andrew is in no rush to leave his long-time residence at Royal Lodge in Windsor.
An official process to transition him out of the property has already begun, but those familiar with the situation believe the move will be slow and far more complicated than first assumed.
According to recent reports, King Charles has initiated formal steps to bring Royal Lodge back under direct control of the Crown as part of a broader reorganization of royal residences. It is said that Andrew, 65, has signed documents acknowledging the conclusion of his lease through the Crown Estate.
However, the notice period is understood to be no less than twelve months, which legally allows him to remain in the home for at least another year. One source claimed that the departure process would not happen quickly, noting that there is little chance of moving vans appearing at the property anytime soon.
Another person with knowledge of the situation said Andrew is in no hurry to leave and is prepared to take his time before relocating.
Practical challenges may also delay the transition. Royal Lodge is not simply a typical residence. The 30-room mansion has been Andrews home for more than twenty years and includes several smaller houses and additional buildings on the grounds. Inside is a large collection of personal belongings accumulated over decades.
Any items that are part of the Royal Collection must first be identified, catalogued, and returned before the estate can be transferred. Early inspections have reportedly found areas of the property that require repair work. In addition, the Crown Estate is said to be evaluating what costs for restoration or maintenance may be deducted from any funds that Andrew might otherwise recover from the lease agreement.
Current expectations suggest that, once arrangements are finalized, Andrew will relocate to accommodation on the Kings Sandringham estate. This move is consistent with his reduced presence and responsibilities within the royal family after stepping away from public duties.
Meanwhile, Sarah Ferguson, who has continued to live at Royal Lodge despite their divorce, is reportedly looking into alternative housing options in the Windsor area.
