Russia seizes control of crucial Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk following prolonged conflict

On Monday, Russia announced that it had seized control of the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk, following months of intense combat over the strategic location. If accurate, this would represent a significant victory for Moscow. The announcement coincides with Russian President Vladimir Putins recent visit to frontline forces, where he expressed gratitude for their achievements in Pokrovsk.

The Russian offensive has incurred substantial casualties. Ukraine has not officially responded to Moscows statement. However, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Ukrainian Center for Countering Disinformation, warned that Russia is likely to continue pressuring the front lines and accompany such operations with prominent statements. Kovalenko emphasized that these messages are aimed primarily at international audiences to strengthen Moscows diplomatic position amid ongoing peace negotiations.

Earlier, the Ukrainian Armed Forces stated that despite the challenging conditions in Pokrovsk and surrounding areas, their troops are still holding back the enemys advance.

Russias claim follows high-level discussions between US and Ukrainian officials in Florida about potential paths to end the conflict. Additionally, US President Donald Trumps special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is scheduled to meet with Putin on Tuesday, according to Kremlin reports.

General Valery Gerasimov, head of the Russian General Staff, reportedly informed Putin on Sunday at a military command post that Russian forces had captured Pokrovsk, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed on Monday. The reason for the delayed announcement remains unclear.

Video released by the Kremlin and verified by CNN shows Russian troops raising a Russian flag in Pokrovsks city center, an area reportedly under Moscows control for some time. Russia has been attempting to take Pokrovsk for over 20 months, facing increasing losses.

Pokrovsk has long been strategically important to Ukraine due to its road and rail connections. However, repeated drone and artillery strikes on major transport routes forced Kyiv to develop alternative supply lines, reducing the citys tactical significance.

During his Sunday visit, Putin praised commanders and military personnel for their efforts. I want to thank you for the results achieved in Pokrovskboth the command and the troops, as well as all fighters executing these combat missions, he said, adding that success in Pokrovsk would ensure steady progress toward Russias overall objectives in the conflict.
