Malaysias transport authorities announced Wednesday that efforts to locate the Malaysia Airlines flight MH370, which disappeared in 2014, will resume later this year. The plane went missing on March 8, 2014, carrying 239 people, mostly Chinese citizens. It was en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it unexpectedly veered off course toward the southern reaches of the Indian Ocean, where authorities believe it ultimately crashed.
Renewed Search Mission
The ministry confirmed that Ocean Infinity, a U.S.-based marine robotics company, will conduct a series of intermittent search operations lasting 55 days, starting December 30. The mission will concentrate on zones identified as having the highest probability of containing the wreckage.
"This step highlights Malaysia's ongoing dedication to bringing closure to the families affected by this tragic event," the ministry stated.
Ocean Infinity Contract Details
Earlier this year, Malaysia signed a "no-find, no-fee" agreement with Ocean Infinity to scan a 5,800-square-mile area. Search activities were previously suspended in April due to adverse weather conditions. Under the current contract, Ocean Infinity stands to receive $70 million only if the plane is located. At this point, it remains uncertain whether the company has new leads on its whereabouts.
Previous extensive seabed surveys in 2018 produced no results, although fragments of debris have been found along the East African coastline and on islands in the Indian Ocean.
Government Commitment
"The Malaysian Government continues its unwavering efforts to uncover the truth and extends its support to all affected families," the ministry added in an online statement.
The disappearance of MH370 captivated global media for months, dominating U.S. cable news coverage and significantly boosting viewership for major networks.
