Snowstorm causes cancellation of hundreds of flights during busy travel weekend

Hundreds of flights were grounded on Sunday as a snowstorm swept through the Midwest. Chicago's O'Hare International Airport experienced the highest number of cancellations and delays.

On Saturday, approximately 1,500 flights in Chicago were canceled when the storm first struck. The disruptions continued into Sunday, affecting hundreds more flights across the United States.

As of 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, around 350 flights to and from O'Hare were canceled. Midway Airport reported nine cancellations, according to flight-tracking service FlightAware. Numerous other flights in the Chicago area faced delays, impacting one of the nations busiest travel hubs.

The winter storm coincided with post-Thanksgiving travel, one of the busiest periods of the year. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) had predicted a record-breaking travel surge, expecting to screen over 17.8 million passengers from November 25 to December 2, including more than 3 million on Sunday alone.

The National Weather Service issued a forecast warning of accumulating snow in the Chicago region from Monday afternoon into Monday night. Officials cautioned that travel could be hazardous during the Monday evening commute, with possible lingering effects on Tuesday morning.

The Weather Prediction Center also indicated the potential for another winter storm to impact New England and the Mid-Atlantic in the coming days.
