Teen dies from brain injury following bike accident

An 18-year-old lost his life after colliding with a tree while riding a malfunctioning electric off-road bike, according to an inquest report. Jibrael Fehintola was out with a friend in West Park, Leeds, on 23 August when he lost control of the bike, striking a gate post and then a tree at a property on Moor Grange View.

Emergency responders treated him at the scene before he was transported to Leeds General Infirmary. Medical staff later informed his family that his brain injury was irreparable and treatment was withdrawn.

The inquest at Wakefield Coroner's Court revealed the motorbike had a faulty rear brake and a defective throttle, factors that contributed to the fatal crash. Witnesses estimated the bikes speed between 50 and 60 mph. Forensic crash investigator Aiden Whiteley explained that the stuck throttle prevented Jibrael from slowing down, while the broken rear brake further reduced his control.

Jibrael's friend recounted hearing him shout warnings about the bike, including phrases such as "the revs are sticking" and "it won't stop," before the collision occurred almost instantly.

The electric bike was not street legal, lacked registration, and had been modified to start without a key. The inquest also noted that Jibrael was inexperienced as a rider and was not wearing a helmet during the crash.

His family described him as the youngest of five siblings, a joyful and active individual who loved sports and spending time with family, especially during Ramadan. They remembered him as ambitious, hardworking, and resilient, with a smile that brightened any room.

Assistant Coroner John Hobson recorded the cause of death as extensive brain injury resulting from a road traffic collision. While he could not specify the exact speed, he confirmed Jibrael had been riding at a significant pace. He expressed condolences, noting the tragedy of losing someone so young.
