IRBIL, Iraq On Wednesday, the United States officially opened an expansive consulate in Irbil, the capital of Iraqs semiautonomous Kurdish region. The initiative underscores Washingtons growing diplomatic and strategic engagement in northern Iraq, particularly as U.S. forces redeploy from other areas under an agreement with Baghdad concerning operations against the Islamic State.
U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Michael Rigas attended the inauguration alongside Kurdish officials. The new compound, intended to become the largest U.S. consulate globally, occupies a 206,000-square-meter (50-acre) site along the IrbilShaqlawa highway and represents a $796 million investment.
This consulate provides a secure platform to promote U.S. interests, Rigas stated. It reflects the benefits a sovereign, stable, and prosperous Iraq can achieve through partnership with the United States, serving both Iraqi citizens and American priorities.
The consulates launch comes amid ongoing security and regional challenges in Iraq, including attacks on critical energy infrastructure. A recent drone strike on the Kormor natural gas field caused significant power outages. While no organization has claimed responsibility, Rigas pointed to Iran-aligned militias as likely actors and called on both Baghdad and Irbil to dismantle such groups that undermine Iraqi sovereignty.
Kurdish regional President Nechirvan Barzani described the consulate as a strong political statement highlighting the importance of Irbil and the Kurdistan region. He emphasized that the facility will act as a central hub for diplomatic, economic, and security cooperation between the U.S. and Kurdish authorities.
