Utilizing wartime experience: IDF enhances C4I-Cyber directorate with new AI, spectrum divisions

The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced the creation of two new divisions within its C4I and Cyber Defense Directorate, aimed at enhancing communication, spectrum control, and artificial intelligence capabilities. This initiative comes in response to operational lessons learned during the recent conflict with Hamas.

New Divisions: Sphere and AI

The newly formed Sphere Division will focus on spectrum management and strategic communications, ensuring operational superiority and uninterrupted communication for IDF units. Initially designed for defensive purposes, the divisions scope will now include offensive capabilities and activities related to space and satellite systems, reflecting global technological trends.

The AI Division will spearhead the development of advanced platforms, systems, and artificial intelligence tools to exponentially boost the operational efficiency of IDF forces. Its mandate includes driving innovation through cutting-edge technology, cross-branch collaboration, and the cultivation of personnel expertise and organizational culture.

Reservists Play Key Role

Recognizing the value of civilian expertise, the AI Division will incorporate a dedicated unit of reservists with professional experience in Israel's high-tech sector. This decision stems from the directorates wartime experience, which highlighted the need to integrate civilian knowledge into military cyber operations.

Technological Advancements During the War

During the Israel-Hamas conflict, the C4I and Cyber Defense Directorate significantly intensified its activities. New solutions were developed to provide real-time information access across all operational systems. An AI-based system was also created to transcribe communications from tanks, aircraft, submarines, and other units within seconds, enhancing combat operation efficiency.

Additional tools were introduced to improve the identification of fallen soldiers and optimize manpower management, including reservist deployment, ensuring personnel availability and reducing operational gaps.

Directorate Structure and Leadership

Prior to the expansion, the directorate comprised the Cyber Defense Division, the Operations and Signal Corps Division, and the Force Buildup Staff Division, under the command of Major-General Aviad Dagan. In October, media visits to the training base near Beersheba highlighted ongoing efforts to prepare the next generation of cyber defenders.

National AI Strategy

The Prime Ministers Office has emphasized the strategic importance of artificial intelligence. Brigadier-General (res.) Erez Askal was appointed to lead the National Artificial Intelligence Directorate, tasked with positioning Israel as a global AI leader. This national directorate will drive innovation, regulation, infrastructure, and research, although coordination between the IDF and PMO AI units has not yet been clarified.
