Health risk prompts recall of Wegmans mixed nuts

Wegmans has announced a recall of certain mixed nut products due to a potential contamination with salmonella, a bacteria that can trigger foodborne illness. The recall involves two specific versions of the stores Deluxe Unsalted Mixed Nuts.

The affected items include a 34-ounce Family Pack, marked with UPC 0-77890-42131-4, Lot code DC 58041, and a Best By date of July 28, 2026. This information is located beneath the lid on the side of the container.

Smaller 11-ounce bags are also impacted, identifiable by UPC 0-77890-42135-2, Lot code DC 58171, and a Best By date of August 10, 2026 printed on the bottom back of the package.

Wegmans has not disclosed the total number of affected cases or the states where the products were distributed. While no illnesses have been reported so far, the company advises customers to return the nuts to their purchase location for a full refund. The recalled mixes contain almonds, cashews, pistachios, and pecans.

According to the FDA, salmonella infections can appear 12 to 72 hours after consuming contaminated food, typically lasting four to seven days. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever, and abdominal cramps, with severe infections more likely in young children, elderly individuals, and those with weakened immune systems. The CDC reports salmonella as the second most common cause of foodborne illness in the U.S., responsible for approximately 1.35 million cases, 420 deaths, and 26,500 hospitalizations annually.

Earlier this year, the U.S. has seen multiple salmonella outbreaks, including one linked to home-delivered meal kits from Metabolic Meals, which hospitalized seven people. Wegmans has also issued previous recalls, such as its Locatelli Grated Pecorino Romano Cheese, due to possible Listeria contamination.
