Report of Phillies-Astros Trade Surfaces During Kyle Schwarber's MLB Free Agency

The Philadelphia Phillies primary goal this offseason is to keep designated hitter Kyle Schwarber on the roster. Losing the 32-year-old left-handed power hitter would leave a major gap in the lineup that could be difficult to fill.

Schwarber had a standout 2025 season with the Phillies, finishing second in National League MVP voting. His offensive contributions were especially remarkable: over 162 games, he recorded a .240 batting average, .365 on-base percentage, .928 OPS, 56 home runs, and 132 RBIs, leading all of Major League Baseball in total home runs and RBIs. His performance was a key factor in Philadelphia securing consecutive NL East division titles.

As the winter meetings approach, updates have emerged regarding the Phillies efforts to re-sign Schwarber. While both parties are interested in a reunion, Schwarber is expected to weigh offers from other teams in a competitive market following his exceptional season. ESPNs Jeff Passan noted that the Phillies are favored to re-sign him. Schwarbers market is healthy. Hes going to get years, and hes going to get AAV. He might be the likeliest of the big free agents to sign first. The Phillies remain the favorite, with Boston, Cincinnati, the Mets, and others in the mix, Passan reported.

Even if Philadelphia retains Schwarber, the team still has outfield gaps to fill and may face reduced payroll flexibility due to the potential size of his next contract. According to The Athletic, the Phillies are actively exploring trades for Houston Astros outfielder Jake Meyers. The report highlighted that quality center fielders are scarce, increasing interest in players available via trade. Meyers, coming off a modest offensive breakout, is attracting attention from multiple teams including the Phillies, Mets, Rays, Orioles, Diamondbacks, and Royals.

Acquiring Meyers would help Philadelphia address its outfield needs without making another major free-agent commitment. Under team control with Houston for the next two seasons, Meyers offers a cost-effective option to stabilize center field while contributing offensively. In 2025, the 29-year-old hit .292 with a .354 on-base percentage, .727 OPS, and 24 RBIs over 104 games.

By securing both Schwarber and Meyers, the Phillies could simultaneously strengthen their lineup and defensive depth, reinforcing their position as NL East leaders and improving their chances in a World Series run.
