Generous donations help 88-year-old veteran retire with over $1.5 million

People from around the world have contributed more than $1.5 million to assist an 88-year-old veteran in retiring from his job at a Michigan supermarket. Ed Bambas, who returned to work after his wife passed away and his pension was cut, gained widespread attention when Australian social media influencer Sam Weidenhofer shared his story.

Bambas explained to ABC Detroits WXYZ that he resumed employment nearly ten years ago after losing his wife to a long illness, and his previous pension was eliminated. He initially worked at a hardware store before moving to a cashier role at Meijer, where he continues to work.

In a TikTok video that went viral, Weidenhofer approaches Bambas during his shift, introduces himself, and surprises him with a $400 tip. In the video, Weidenhofer tells Bambas, I'd like to share your story and get people to help you retire, which has garnered over 7 million views since being posted.

An emotional Bambas responds with tears, explaining he works 40 hours per week and dreams of enjoying a life he had once hoped for. Inspired by his story, Weidenhofer traveled more than 9,000 miles from Australia to meet Bambas and set up an online fundraiser to support his retirement.

The fundraiser has already raised over $1.5 million, which is expected to help Bambas pay off debts and retire comfortably. Weidenhofer shared, No 88-year-old in America should have to work because they need to, and that breaks my heart. I just wanted to give him a chance to retire and have some comfort.
