Brazilian director Aly Muritiba and actor-producer Luca Castellani bring a fresh perspective to the immigrant experience with their live-action short America, which has drawn Oscar attention. The film centers on a poignant love story while highlighting the vulnerabilities and frustrations that often accompany immigrant life.
The narrative follows Tom (Castellani), a Brazilian bartender in the U.S., who secretly engages in sexual encounters with American men during his shifts. Tom views these moments as a form of ancestral revenge, reflecting a deeper sense of powerlessness many immigrants endure. Beneath this bravado, he struggles with feelings of unworthiness and vulnerability in a society where immigrants are frequently marginalized or targeted.
Toms life takes a turn when he meets Josh (Cheyenne Jackson), an all-American cowboy, sparking a passionate but ultimately tragic romance. Their relationship becomes the target of a jealous police officer, leading to a devastating conclusion.
For Muritiba, the story emerged from discussions with Castellani about his experiences in the U.S., though the film is not a literal autobiography. Castellani received the script shortly after their meeting and immediately embraced the opportunity, recognizing it as a way to create space for Latino actors in Hollywood, where representation remains extremely limited. Latino actors make up only about 4% of roles in Hollywood. I realized I couldnt wait for someone to cast me; I had to create my own opportunities, Castellani explained.
Toms clandestine sexual encounters are portrayed not as mere provocation but as a complex reflection of his search for empowerment. Castellani describes these moments as the only time Tom feels a sense of agency over his life, however fleeting.
In contrast, Josh symbolizes hope and protection, representing the promise of America and the potential for compassion toward immigrants. A powerful moment in the film occurs when Josh places his cowboy hat on Toms heada gesture of belonging and care. Castellani interprets it as a call for Americans to stand up for immigrant rights and justice.
Playing Tom marked Castellanis debut as a lead actor and involved emotionally intense scenes. His final climactic scene, filmed under strict time constraints, required multiple takes, leaving the cast and crew visibly moved. Muritiba later congratulated Castellani, declaring him a real actor after witnessing his performance.
Reflecting on the films broader impact, Castellani hopes America encourages viewers to embrace tolerance, unity, and protection of vulnerable communities, emphasizing the responsibility of both Americans and Hollywood to highlight immigrant stories.
