Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa enjoyed a remarkable career that spanned several decades and included a wide range of film and television roles. Early in his career, he appeared in shows such as Star Trek: The Next Generation and MacGyver. He later gained recognition in Bernardo Bertoluccis The Last Emperor, and achieved greater fame with his portrayal of Shang Tsung in the 1995 film Mortal Kombat. Other notable appearances include Planet of the Apes (2001) and Pearl Harbor.

On Thursday, Tagawa passed away at the age of 75 in Santa Barbara. According to reports from USA TODAY, the cause of death was complications resulting from a stroke.

Entertainment Weekly shared additional details, noting that Tagawas former wife of 30 years, Sally Phillips, who is also the mother of their two children, recalled his dedication to martial arts. She mentioned that he moved to Los Angeles to develop and teach his own martial arts style, Chu Shin, before being discovered by Bertolucci and cast in The Last Emperor.

Tagawas contributions to film and television left a lasting impact, and thoughts go out to his family and loved ones during this time.
