Cynthia Erivo has shared her perspective on the notable cardigan worn by Elphaba in Wicked: For Good. The piece, which gained significant attention online, has sparked varied reactions from viewers, some questioning its place in the character's wardrobe during an intimate scene.

Speaking at the Elphaba Wicked Retreat Airbnb Originals Experience in Los Angeles on December 3, Erivo, 38, discussed the intent behind the garment. The cozy sweater appears in the sensual As Long as Youre Mine scene with Fiyero, portrayed by Jonathan Bailey, and has become a focal point of fan discussion.

Erivo explained that the cardigan was designed to reveal a softer, more vulnerable side of Elphaba. I wanted to give an opportunity to see a character who is usually seen as a strong, fighting womanthe wicked witchas someone who can be on her own, she said. I wanted something that removes the armor for a moment and shows a more sensual, more connected side of her.

She emphasized that the goal was not to sexualize the character. The aim is to portray her as a tender human being, worthy of love and intimacy. Thats a beautiful thing.

Costume designer Paul Tazewell also spoke about the cardigan in an NPR interview. He explained that the choice emerged naturally from considering what Elphaba would realistically have access to in her environment. Living alone, what would she choose when looking for something protective and warm? The sweater functions as a makeshift robe for that moment, Tazewell said.

Tazewell added that more traditionally glamorous garments, like a black, slinky peignoir, would not have fit the characters context. This piece helps define who she is and what matters to her. Its part of telling the story silently through her wardrobe, he explained.

Reflecting on the costume work for the Wicked films, Tazewell noted that over 1,000 costumes were created, including 25 looks for Glinda and 24 for Elphaba, often with multiple variations. Some elaborate designs, such as Glindas bubble dress, involved hundreds of pattern pieces and hundreds of hours of handwork to achieve the desired magical effect.

When I envision Glinda, I think of that fairy-tale quality and magical silhouette, Tazewell said. The costumes are meant to enhance the storytelling and complement the characters performances.
