The December 2 airing of NCIS: Origins delivered an emotional story centered on Cliff Wheeler (Patrick Fischler), but its Mark Harmons narration as the older Gibbs in Alaska that truly stands out. The episode opens and closes with Harmons reflective voiceover on Wheeler.
Gibbs describes Wheeler as a man who spent much of his life alone. He was often by himself in his office with the door closed, and also at home, Harmons voice explains. Though I interacted with him daily, he remained somewhat mysterious. He didnt seem to enjoy solitude; he wanted connection. A person to ask how his day went and genuinely care. Had he had someone like that, he might have been a different man.
Wheeler does find such companionship in Noah Oakley (DaJuan Johnson). Their relationship, however, is secret due to the social norms of the 90s. In this episode, Wheelers wife, Shelly (Lauren Bowles), leaves him after discovering he is seeing Oakley. Overwhelmed, Wheeler blurts out the news of his divorce in the office, highlighting his inner turmoil.
The plot thickens when a person of interest (Rick Cosnett) provides an alibi revealing he spent the night with another man. Wheeler contemplates reporting the colonel for misconduct, citing vulnerability to blackmail and security concerns due to his sexuality. Mary Jo (Tyla Abercrumbie) intervenes, refusing to assist in the report and warning Wheeler about the personal consequences of his actions.
Despite Wheelers frustration with Mary Jos guidance, she remains firm. Ill walk out and keep this place running, but you can dial your own phone, she asserts. Wheeler ultimately chooses not to report the colonel, heeding her advice about self-forgiveness. However, he does recommend Oakley for a position with a joint criminal intelligence team in D.C., showcasing his happiness and support for Oakley.
In his closing narration, Gibbs reflects on solitude. He shares how spending too much time alone can become habitual and lead to pushing others away. Yet, he hints at the possibility of companionship, leaving viewers wondering if someone might eventually join him in Alaska.
Meanwhile, Vera (Diany Rodriguez) considers leading the joint criminal intelligence team, which includes personnel from the FBI, DEA, CID, and NIS. Lala (Mariel Molino) initially feels left out but later learns Vera prefers to establish her own NIS intelligence team rather than move permanently to D.C., easing the tension between them.
Crazy Little Thing Called Love explores themes of loneliness, connection, and personal choices, with standout performances and heartfelt narration by Harmon. The episode raises intriguing possibilities for future storylines across NCIS: Origins and its parent series.
