WASHINGTON Former President Joe Biden delivered a powerful message on Friday, calling on LGBTQ+ individuals to rise and defend their rights in the face of President Donald Trumps attacks. Addressing attendees at the International LGBTQ+ Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C., Biden received a standing ovation as he urged, Now is not the time to back down. Stand up and fight for your rights!
He emphasized the core of the struggle: protecting the Constitution and ensuring that every American receives fundamental respect and fairness. This fight is about basic decency for all, Biden explained.
The event, organized by the LGBTQ+ Victory Institute, honored Biden with an award recognizing his long-standing advocacy for LGBTQ+ policies and the unprecedented representation of LGBTQ+ officials during his administration. His appearance marked the first time a former president attended the annual gathering.
During his roughly 15-minute address, Biden reflected on his history of supporting LGBTQ+ rights, including his notable 2012 declaration in favor of same-sex marriage while serving as vice president, a statement that preceded President Barack Obamas similar endorsement.
However, much of Bidens speech focused on criticizing Trumps actions toward the LGBTQ+ community. He specifically denounced Trumps attacks on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as well as his efforts to undermine transgender rights. Trump is attempting to twist our movement for equality into something frightening and divisive, Biden said.
He further asserted, This administration is exploiting these issues to create division, but equality is a fundamental American value. Nothing could be more American than ensuring everyone is treated with fairness and respect.
The speech moved many attendees, with some visibly emotional. Biden addressed young LGBTQ+ individuals directly, urging them to embrace their identity and assuring them of their worth. You are loved. You are heard. You belong, he said emphatically.
Before departing, Biden recognized the LGBTQ+ elected officials in attendance, asking them to stand and receive acknowledgment for their contributions. Think of what youve achieved, he told them, expressing gratitude for their work and dedication.
