Minnesota Democrats condemn Trump's "disgusting" attack on Somalis as "poisonous racism"

President Donald Trump is under intense scrutiny from Minnesota Democrats following his inflammatory remarks targeting Somali immigrants, many of whom live in the state.

During a White House cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Trump referred to Somali people as garbage and stated that he does not want them in our country. He added, These are people that do nothing but complain. When they come from hell and complain and do nothing but bitch, we dont want them in our country. Let them go back to where they came from and fix it.

The statements prompted immediate backlash from Minnesota officials, where approximately 80,000 Somali residents live, mostly in the Minneapolis-St. Paul region.

Minneapolis is proud to be home to the largest Somali community in the country, said Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey on social media. They are our neighbors, our friends, and our family and they are welcome in our city. Nothing Donald Trump does will ever change that.

Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison condemned Trumps remarks as poisonous racism and a disgraceful attack on Minnesotas Somali community. Ellison emphasized that singling out individuals based on their race or country of origin is downright disgusting.

Trump also targeted Representative Ilhan Omar, a Somali-American and the first woman of color representing Minnesota in Congress, labeling her and her associates as garbage. Omar, who became a U.S. citizen in 2000 at age 17, responded dismissively, writing on social media, His obsession with me is creepy. I hope he gets the help he desperately needs.
