Netanyahu appeals to Israeli president for pardon in corruption cases

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally requested a presidential pardon in the midst of ongoing legal proceedings against him. On Sunday, the Presidents Office confirmed that Netanyahu submitted the petition to President Isaac Herzog.

Netanyahu faces three separate corruption trials that began in 2019, involving allegations of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. He denies all charges and has entered pleas of not guilty.

In an official statement, Herzogs office noted: The Office of the President is aware that this is an extraordinary request which carries significant implications. After reviewing all relevant opinions, the president will carefully and responsibly consider the request.

The pardon request arrives as US President Donald Trump has publicly urged Herzog to grant clemency. Earlier in November, Trump sent Herzog a letter advocating for Netanyahus pardon. During his visit to Israel in October, Trump addressed the Israeli parliament, emphasizing the same request.

Netanyahu is also under scrutiny by the International Criminal Court (ICC)Yoav Gallant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.

Netanyahu is the first sitting Israeli prime minister to face trial, with charges including fraud, breach of trust, and accepting bribes. The allegations claim he received nearly 700,000 shekels (approximately $211,832) in gifts from wealthy political supporters.

While largely ceremonial, the Israeli presidency holds the power to pardon convicted individuals under exceptional circumstances. Netanyahus trial, which began in 2020, has not yet concluded.

In a video statement, Netanyahu argued that the trial has divided the nation and suggested that a pardon could help restore unity. He also said that the requirement to appear in court three times weekly hampers his ability to govern effectively.

The pardon request includes two documents: a detailed letter from his lawyer and a personal letter from Netanyahu. These will first be reviewed by the justice ministry before being sent to the Presidents Legal Advisor, who will provide additional guidance for Herzogs consideration.
