Trump warns of 'civilizational erasure' in Europe due to migration

A recent National Security Strategy issued by the White House warns that Europe could face a profound transformation if migration levels remain unchecked. The 29-page report suggests that, within two decades, the continent might look drastically different, with some countries potentially becoming majority non-European.

The document criticizes European migration policies, stating they are contributing to societal tensions, limiting free speech, and weakening political opposition. It also highlights declining birthrates as a factor eroding national identity and self-assurance.

The report questions whether nations with high migration will continue to uphold the principles of NATO and maintain alliances with the United States as firmly as they did at the time of the alliances founding. In response, the US intends to support efforts within Europe that resist the current trajectory, identifying potential allies among nationalist and patriotic political parties across the continent, including France's National Rally, Spain's Vox, the UK's Reform Party, Germany's AfD, and Italy's Brothers of Italy.

European diplomats expressed concern over the suggestion that the US may favor opposition parties aligned with its interests rather than engaging with incumbent governments. Former Swedish Prime Minister Carl Bildt compared it to a more intense version of US Vice President JD Vance's previous criticisms of Europe.

The strategy also appears critical of European nations' role in the Ukraine conflict, alleging that some governments maintain unrealistic expectations and compromise democratic principles in ways that undermine peace efforts. The report cites examples such as Romanias election decisions under scrutiny for Russian influence and the challenges faced by France's government amid political instability and a rising hard-right presence.

According to the document, a majority of Europeans desire peace, but this preference is often obstructed by governments that undermine democratic processes. The report additionally touches on NATO expansion, aligning in part with Russias criticism of a perpetually growing alliance, signaling potential disagreements over countries like Moldova joining the bloc.

The strategy emphasizes a shift of NATO responsibilities onto European states by 2027, including intelligence, missile production, and troop deployment, with the US warning that non-compliance could lead to reduced involvement in coordination mechanisms. Washingtons approach prioritizes regional control in the Western Hemisphere, with an America First focus, while reducing emphasis on China compared to Europe and South America.

In South America, the US plans to collaborate with cooperative governments against drug cartels and transnational criminal organizations. The administration has also targeted Venezuelan President Nicols Maduro, accusing him of drug trafficking and posing threats to US citizens, while seeking to limit foreign influence over critical regional assets, including ports along the Panama Canal.
