Support for President Donald Trump among Americans aged 18 to 29 is sharply declining, a critical demographic that played a major role in his 2024 election win. According to CNNs chief data analyst, his favorability among this group has plummeted from +10 in February to -46 currently.
During an appearance on OutFront with Erin Burnett, analyst Harry Enten shared new data from CBS News and YouGov, describing the decline as stunning and unusually rapid, emphasizing the scale of the shift.
Enten noted that in the 2020 election, only 31 percent of voters aged 18 to 24 supported Trump over Joe Biden. In contrast, in 2024, Trump secured 43 percent of this demographic, helping him comfortably defeat Kamala Harris. Generation Z showed the biggest increase in support compared to other age groups, Enten explained. They were crucial to his victory.
Much of Trumps initial appeal to young voters was attributed to his son Barron Trump, who encouraged appearances on popular right-wing podcasts hosted by figures like Joe Rogan, Theo Von, and Logan Paul. These appearances targeted younger male voters involved in the manosphere.
However, some of these influencers, including Rogan, have recently criticized Trump, condemning his immigration policies and mocking his communication style. Rogan has also publicly rejected claims of election fraud in 2020, calling such assertions largely speculative.
Polls conducted by CBS News and YouGov in late November highlight potential reasons for youth disillusionment. Respondents expressed concerns about the administrations actions toward Venezuela, rising grocery costs, mass deportations, and a lack of transparency regarding Jeffrey Epstein, showing widespread distrust of Trumps statements on these issues.
In November, the young democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani won the New York City mayoral race with a platform focused on affordability, capturing the attention of younger voters. Concurrently, Gallup data shows that 49 percent of 18-to-34-year-olds now view socialism positively, surpassing the 43 percent who favor capitalism.
Looking toward future elections, a poll by McLaughlin and Associates indicated that Vice President JD Vance leads as Trumps potential successor, although his lead has slightly narrowed due to growing support for Donald Trump Jr., who remains popular within the MAGA movement and could emerge as a 2028 candidate without Washington entanglements.
