According to newly released Gallup polling, a growing share of Americans believe both major political parties should significantly scale back the harsh language they use when addressing opponents. The survey indicates that 69% of U.S. adults feel the Republican Party and its supporters have crossed a line in their rhetoric, while 60% say Democrats have done the same.
These levels reflect notable increases compared with 2011, the last time Gallup posed this question in the aftermath of the attack that injured former Representative Gabby Giffords. Although respondents tend to hold the opposing party far more responsible for escalating tensions and fewer Democrats now view their own partys tone as excessive compared with 2011 the overall rise in concern is significant, especially in light of the recent assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
When asked what they believe contributes most to acts of violence, Americans most frequently pointed to the spread of extremist ideologies online. This was followed by the influence of combative rhetoric from well-known political figures and media commentators.
