Republican Leader's Uncomfortable Discussion with CNBC's Joe Kernan Regarding GOP's Health Care Proposal.

Jason Smith, Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, encountered a tense moment Friday while speaking with CNBC's Joe Kernen regarding the GOP's approach to reforming the U.S. health care system.

Kernen asked, The Speaker is developing something are you involved in the process, especially with what might unfold this weekend? Mike Johnson suggested that by next week, Republicans could present a plan that goes beyond simply addressing the expiring ACA subsidies. Will it be a single bill or multiple pieces of legislation?

Smith avoided specifics, saying, Thats really a question for the Speaker. We are exploring several options in response to current challenges.

Kernen warned that the lack of clarity around health care could benefit Democrats in the 2026 midterms. They might gain 40 seats in the House because of this, he said. Its surprising, but perhaps this uncertainty has been part of a larger strategy.

Smith criticized the state of Obamacare while acknowledging GOP efforts. Obamacare has serious flaws. Republicans have long criticized it, and now it seems theres a scramble to finalize a plan, he stated. When pressed, he clarified, I didnt say we have a finalized plan. There are tax provisions and other elements under consideration.

Kernen questioned further about Speaker Johnsons comments on a plan, and Smith confirmed, Yesterday he mentioned that work on a plan is ongoing.

The discussion included perspectives from Andrew Ross Sorkin, who agreed with Kernen that both parties share responsibility for the current health care challenges.

Video of the exchange is available on CNBC.
