Residents near former President Donald Trumps Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida, are expressing frustration over a newly imposed no-fly zone that has permanently redirected airplane traffic over their homes. Traditionally, Palm Beach residents only experienced temporary street closures and travel limitations when the president was in town. However, last month, the Secret Service implemented new flight restrictions that now divert aircraft away from Mar-a-Lagousually in the Palm Beach Airports pathcausing planes to fly over neighborhoods previously untouched by aviation noise and pollution, according to The Washington Post.
The Mar-a-Lago mansion, a lavish property built in 1926 by cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, spans 17 acres and features 58 bedrooms and 33 bathrooms. Today, residents report that airplanes are roaring above their homes from early morning until late at night, making rest difficult. Real estate agents note that homes under the new flight paths have seen values drop by as much as 20 percent, while properties outside these zones carry a premium.
During a recent Citizens Committee on Airport Noise meeting, locals voiced concern that these temporary flight restrictions, which the Secret Service says will remain in place until at least October next year, might become permanent. Trump has long sought to redirect flights over Mar-a-Lago, purchasing the estate in 1985 for $8 million and filing lawsuits against the county and airport in 1995, 2010, and 2015. Settlements and dropped cases over the years included agreements to widen flight paths and the lease of land for his Trump International Golf Club. Plans were paused when Trump became president, as flights no longer passed over the estate during his presence.
One resident at the committee meeting suggested that the current situation gives Trump the chance to achieve a long-sought goal, warning that the changes could extend for years or indefinitely. The island community is home to affluent residents, many of whom supported Trump in 2024, but frustration appears to be growing even among his backers.
Local authorities were caught off guard by the restrictions, and neither the White House nor the Secret Service has offered a detailed explanation. A Secret Service spokesperson told The Washington Post, To ensure the highest levels of safety and security for the President, the U.S. Secret Service requested the FAA implement additional temporary flight restrictions over Mar-a-Lago. We understand this may affect the public and appreciate the communitys understanding as we prioritize the Presidents safety.
