Trump Names Government Building in Honor of His Favorite President

The U.S. Institute of Peace building in Washington, D.C., now bears a new and unexpected title. Fresh lettering appeared on its exterior this week, identifying it as the Donald J. Trump United States Institute of Peace.

The renaming follows a February executive order in which Trump moved to significantly reduce the congressionally funded institutes functions. The State Department announced the change on its official channels, calling Trump the greatest dealmaker in our nations history, and welcoming the public to the newly titled institution. Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed the sentiment, stating that Trump would be recognized as a President of Peace.

The institute has been a frequent target of Trumps directives since January. His earlier executive order sought to shrink the organizations staff and responsibilities to the bare minimum required by law. After dismissals, legal disputes, and a confrontation involving federal and local law enforcement, the current scope of the institutes work remains uncertain. Its website lists no contact details and offers only a single line describing its mission to assist the Executive Branch in addressing violent conflicts abroad.

Trump is scheduled to appear at the venue on Tuesday to oversee the signing of a peace agreement between leaders of Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a conflict he has included among the several he claims to have helped resolve.

Known for attaching his name to a wide array of ventures before entering politics, Trump reportedly plans additional naming efforts. These include a proposal to brand the new Washington Commanders stadium with his name and intentions to dedicate the upcoming White House ballroom to himself. He has also hinted online at the idea of a Trump/Kennedy Center.

California Governor Gavin Newsom quickly responded to the renaming with ridicule, comparing it to calling a fast-food chains fictional KFC Institute for Veganism.
