Trump will announce a 'reset' of fuel-economy standards for vehicles at Oval Office event, according to White House official

President Donald Trump is set to announce changes to federal vehicle fuel-efficiency standards in a presentation at the Oval Office on Wednesday afternoon, according to a White House spokesperson. Senior executives from major automakers, including the CEOs of Ford and Stellantis, along with a manager from a General Motors plant, are expected to attend the event.

The Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) standards, introduced in 1975, define average fuel-efficiency targets for new cars and trucks. The previous administration under President Biden had proposed gradual increases in these requirements to encourage electric vehicle adoption and address climate change concerns. Trumps plan is anticipated to reverse these increases.

In advance of the announcement, Ford CEO Jim Farley expressed support for the decision, highlighting the companys backing of the revised federal standards. Farley stated that aligning fuel-efficiency rules with market conditions allows progress on emissions and energy efficiency while maintaining consumer choice and affordability.

Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa also welcomed the move, suggesting the adjustments better match consumer demand. He emphasized the companys commitment to working with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration on policies that balance environmental responsibility with providing customers a variety of affordable vehicle options.
