Allies of former President Donald Trump are increasingly worried that he is prioritizing controversial or extravagant projects over the needs of his MAGA supporters during his second term. A detailed article in The Atlantic portrays the 79-year-old Trump as increasingly isolated, limiting domestic travel, and disconnected from voter expectations.
Supporters wanted him to reduce prices, revive manufacturing, and challenge those exploiting Americans, a close associate told the publication. They didnt expect him to construct a lavish ballroom. Hes not listening to them.
Concerns are growing within the Republican Party and the White House that Trump is not only ignoring the electorates priorities but actively disregarding them. Polls indicate his approval ratings have fallen to historic lows, potentially harming the GOP in next years midterms.
Trump has often dismissed the idea of a cost-of-living crisis affecting millions of Americans, labeling related polling as fake. Instead of addressing these economic concerns, he has demolished the East Wing of the White House to create a luxury ballroom, with costs reportedly reaching $300 million. Other initiatives during his second term, such as pursuing indictments against political opponents and threatening military action in Venezuela, also clash with voter expectations.
The Atlantic notes that Trumps detachment may stem from his reduced in-person engagements with citizens. He has cut back on domestic trips, favors international travel, and has nearly eliminated the large-scale, energetic rallies that defined his political identity. Since this fall, his public appearances outside Washington, D.C., his New Jersey golf club, or Mar-a-Lago in Florida have been limited to just five occasions, three of which were attending sports events in New York.
According to The New York Times, Trumps second term has seen a 39% decline in official appearances, dropping from 1,688 in the first ten months of his first term to 1,029 this year, raising questions about his physical and mental health. The Atlantic speculates that the president may be avoiding domestic events to avoid confronting voters about connections to Jeffrey Epstein.
White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told The Atlantic that Trumps attention remains on securing deals for Americans back home, even during international trips. She added that he intends to actively campaign for Republican candidates ahead of next years midterms. The Daily Beast reached out to the White House for further comment.
