Donald Trumps controversial initiative to prevent individual states from regulating artificial intelligence has encountered yet another obstacle. The proposal, which has drawn significant backing from major tech companies, has repeatedly failed to gain traction.
Earlier this year, Trumps initial attempt to enforce a 10-year pause on state-level AI legislation was removed from the federal budget he signed into law, effectively halting the plan. Even some of his closest supporters, including Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Steve Bannon, expressed opposition to the measure.
Trumps latest effort sought to include the ban within the National Defense Authorization Act. However, the proposal faced strong resistance across the political spectrum, with critics ranging from House Progressive Caucus Leader Greg Casar to Florida Governor Ron DeSantis. Recent reports indicate that this attempt is also stalled.
House Majority Leader Steve Scalise stated that Republican leaders are considering alternative legislative avenues, acknowledging that the NDAA wasnt the best place for this to fit.
Observers now anticipate that Republicans may try to revive the proposal through other channels, even as some MAGA-aligned figures continue to voice concerns over potential future efforts to implement it.
Analysis: Trump’s AI Regulation Push Hits Persistent Roadblocks
From my perspective, Donald Trump’s initiative to block state-level AI regulation highlights the growing tension between federal ambitions and state autonomy. Despite support from leading tech firms, the repeated failures of this proposal underscore deep divisions within both the Republican Party and the broader political landscape.
Earlier attempts, including a proposed 10-year pause on state AI laws, were removed from the federal budget, signaling that even Trump’s closest allies were unwilling to fully endorse such sweeping measures. The latest effort to attach the ban to the National Defense Authorization Act faced similar opposition from key figures on both sides of the aisle.
Given House Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s acknowledgment that the NDAA “wasn’t the best place for this to fit,” it appears that alternative legislative routes will be necessary. For now, the stalled proposal illustrates the complexity of national AI governance and the challenge of reconciling technological innovation with political consensus.
