A strong cold front is sweeping across the United States, with some regions expected to experience their lowest temperatures of the season. Residents in these areas are preparing for record-setting lows.
1. Tennessee Special Election Outcome
Republicans have maintained their narrow House majority in Tennessees 7th District. Matt Van Epps, a former Army helicopter pilot, secured a victory over Democrat Aftyn Behn. The projected 9-point margin is much closer than the 22-point advantage the district favored in last years presidential election. Van Epps benefited from endorsements by former President Donald Trump, Governor Bill Lee, and House Speaker Mike Johnson.
2. Ukraine Peace Talks Stall
Negotiations in Moscow between Russian President Vladimir Putin and top U.S. envoys, including Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff, concluded without a breakthrough on ending the war in Ukraine. Talks lasted nearly five hours and were described as constructive by Kremlin officials, though key proposals conflicted with Russian demands. Disagreements remain over Ukraines army size, territorial control, and NATO membership ambitions.
3. Changes to U.S. Immigration Policy
The U.S. is temporarily halting immigration applications from 19 countries labeled as of concern, including Afghanistan, Iran, Libya, Somalia, and Venezuela, among others. Officials are reviewing all green cards previously issued to citizens from these countries. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem has suggested adding additional nations to the list.
4. Dell Family Donates $6.25 Billion for Child Savings Accounts
Michael and Susan Dell announced a $6.25 billion pledge to fund investment accounts for at least 25 million American children. Part of the initiative, named Trump Accounts, will provide $1,000 to newborns starting in 2026. The Treasury Department will deposit the funds for children born from January 2025 through December 2028, while the Dell donation will support those aged 10 and under.
5. Abbott Glucose Monitors Recalled
The FDA issued a warning about millions of Abbott Diabetes Care glucose monitors giving inaccurate readings. Faulty devices have been linked to at least seven deaths and over 700 serious injuries globally. Incorrect low glucose readings may lead to dangerous treatment decisions. About 3 million sensors are affected, and patients can check eligibility for free replacements at FreeStyleCheck.com.
