After five years of investigation into the explosive devices left near the headquarters of the Republican and Democratic national committees, federal authorities have detained a suspect. On Thursday morning, Virginia resident Brian Cole was arrested and charged with placing the two devices on January 5, 2021, just a day before the formal certification of the 2020 presidential election.
The bombs were positioned between 7:30 p.m. and 8:30 p.m., hours ahead of the violent breach of the U.S. Capitol. Their existence went unnoticed for roughly 15 hours. Although the devices never detonated, officials confirmed they were fully operational and posed a significant threat to anyone nearby.
Online speculation has continued to grow over the years, with numerous theories suggesting the bombs were intended to divert law enforcement from the unfolding events at the Capitol. Two sources familiar with the arrest reported that Cole had previously expressed support for anarchist views, yet no official motive has been publicly confirmed.
The case has drawn intense scrutiny, especially from figures who have repeatedly questioned how the investigation was handled. Some right-wing commentators have suggested the incident was orchestrated from within, while others have accused federal authorities of withholding crucial information during the search for the suspect.
According to the bureau, the investigation required extensive resources: visits to more than 1,200 locations, over 1,000 interviews, the review of 39,000 video recordings, and the examination of hundreds of submitted leads. With a suspect now in custody, officials hope that the unanswered questions surrounding the events of January 6 may finally begin to be resolved.
