Charitable organisations in Barrow, Cumbria are set to receive a share of 400,000 to help residents with health-related challenges or caregiving duties return to the workforce. The funding targets groups assisting individuals with disabilities, long-term medical conditions, or other obstacles that limit their employment opportunities.
Single organisations can apply for grants of up to 50,000, while joint partnership projects may secure as much as 100,000. Westmorland and Furness Council, which is overseeing the programme, said the initiative is designed to empower local groups that are directly supporting people who want to re-enter employment.
The grants are provided through Team Barrow, a collaboration between the government, the local council, and BAE Systems, which operates a major submarine-building facility in the town. The council encouraged voluntary, community and social enterprise organisations working with local employers to submit applications.
According to public health project officer Clare Paling, many residents wish to return to work but encounter significant challenges that hinder them. She noted that gaining access to employment can positively affect both mental and physical wellbeing, and the fund aims to help make job opportunities more attainable.
All approved projects must operate for 12 months from the date funding is awarded. Additional details about eligibility and requirements are available online.
Team Barrow is also progressing with a 200m, decade-long regeneration strategy focused on improving housing, transport, education, and skills development across the town.
