New hospital rule implemented due to increase in flu cases

In response to a significant rise in flu cases, two hospitals in Wiltshire have requested that masks be worn by patients, visitors, and staff. Salisbury District Hospital and Great Western Hospitals have specifically asked individuals in their A&E departments and certain assessment units to cover their faces.

Great Western Hospital reported a 63% increase in flu-related hospital admissions over the past week, with further growth expected in the coming days.

NHS data indicates that last week, approximately 1,700 patients across England were hospitalized with influenza, which is more than 50% higher compared to the same period last year. Health authorities have noted that a more severe flu strain appears to be circulating this season.

While mask-wearing is mandatory in A&E and selected assessment areas, both hospitals also strongly recommend that masks be worn in other clinical areas as an extra precaution. Salisbury District Hospital described the measure as a "temporary, risk-based precaution to protect patients, staff, and services." Visitors are also encouraged to practice frequent handwashing and to avoid visiting if unwell.

Luisa Goddard, chief nurse at Great Western Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, emphasized the importance of flu vaccination. She stated that influenza can lead to serious illness and puts considerable pressure on hospital services each winter, highlighting vaccination as a key preventive step.
