Even before the intense discussions in Moscow on Tuesday wrapped up, it was widely believed that Russian President Vladimir Putin would not make sufficient concessions to end the conflict in Ukraine. Prior to his private meeting with US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, the son-in-law of former President Donald Trump, Putin issued a stern warning that Russia would overpower Europe if pushed into war.
The Guardian noted that Putins aggressive statements seemed designed to create divisions between Washington, which had proposed a Russia-friendly peace plan, and European leaders who were advocating for revisions favorable to Ukraine.
Despite the diplomatic activity, experts remain doubtful that Putin would agree to a diluted settlement. Meanwhile, Ukraines president expressed hope for a swift resolution but voiced concern that US support for peace negotiations might wane over time.
