December Weather Predictions Across the US by The Old Farmer's Almanac

The Old Farmer's Almanac predicts a generally mild winter for much of the country in December 2025, though isolated bursts of severe weather are possible. An early polar vortex has already brought winter conditions to many areas, leaving people curious about what the final month of the year may hold.

According to the Almanacs long-range predictions, December will largely reflect the current La Nia pattern. This typically means colder conditions in the northern states and warmer-than-average temperatures across the southern half of the U.S. However, some southern regions may experience unusual precipitation, including possible snow.

Cold Conditions in the North

The Northeast, Lower Lakes, Ohio Valley, Heartland, Upper Midwest, High Plains, Intermountain, and Pacific Northwest are expected to start December with temperatures ranging from cold to frigid. The Appalachians and Atlantic Corridor begin the month mild, but temperatures will drop as the month progresses. The Appalachians, Upper Midwest, and Heartland may experience a brief warm spell around Christmas.

The Pacific Northwest, Intermountain, and High Plains will gradually warm after a very cold start. Precipitation is expected throughout the northern regions, with consistent snow in the Northeast, Lower Lakes, and Upper Midwest. Some areas in the Upper Midwest may see sunny skies by New Year's. The Atlantic Corridor, Appalachians, Ohio Valley, and Heartland will see alternating rain and snow, with occasional sunny breaks. The Pacific Northwest will be mostly rainy until late December, while the Intermountain and High Plains transition from snow to a mix of rain and sun.

Alaska will experience bitterly cold conditions for the first half of December, with snow and freezing temperatures dominating. During the final week, temperatures will rise, and snow will transition to rain.

Warmer Conditions in the South

The southern half of the Lower 48 states will generally start December with mild weather. Exceptions include Texas and Oklahoma, which will see a few cold days initially, and Florida, which remains cool to mild throughout the month. The Pacific Southwest and Desert Southwest will remain warm until the end of the year.

Temperatures in the South will fluctuate as the month progresses. The Southeast and Deep South start warm, turn cold for a few weeks, warm again around Christmas, and then cool down once more. Texas and Oklahoma will remain warm after a brief cold spell at the beginning, only to cool near the end of December.

Rainfall will be limited in much of the South, consistent with La Nia patterns. The Pacific and Desert Southwest remain mostly dry, while Texas, Oklahoma, and Florida receive light rain at the beginning and end of the month. The Deep South experiences rain early in the month and again during the last two weeks. The Southeast will see rain early and around the third week, sometimes mixed with snow.

Hawaii Weather

Hawaii will see a mix of conditions: warm temperatures with showers in the first half of December, followed by milder temperatures and heavier rain, with some sunny days near Christmas. Overall, temperatures will be close to average, while rainfall remains slightly below normal.
