German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier embarks on state visit to London

On Wednesday morning, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife, Elke Budenbender, landed in London to commence a state visit. They were welcomed by Prince William and Kate Middleton, who accompanied them to Windsor Castle to meet King Charles and Queen Camilla.

Following a royal lunch, Steinmeier and Budenbender are scheduled to hold discussions with Prime Minister Keir Starmer. This marks the first state visit by a German president in 27 years, aimed at strengthening ties outlined in the Kensington Treaty, which was signed in July. The treaty highlights collaboration in defense and business and includes plans for a direct rail connection between Germany and the United Kingdom. The UK is also seeking Germanys assistance in addressing illegal migration, as equipment used to cross the English Channel has reportedly been stored in Germany.

During the visit, schoolchildren waved German flags as the president and his wife arrived at Windsor Castle. Meanwhile, an anti-monarchy group staged a protest. Thames Valley Police stated that they had guided the demonstrators to a designated area and restricted the use of a bullhorn near horses, emphasizing that public safety and the welfare of animals were their priority.

Later in the day, the presidential couple will visit an English football club and Judith Kerr Primary School, named after the renowned German-born author.
